Big Black Weekend Sale (AKA 6th Anniversary)

Along with all of the super limited Black Friday Record Store Releases we did get we also have this nifty sale going on. Everything is on sale 15% off. Things in the store over a year (little number on price tag ends in "0") are 25% off. Anything older than that (little number ends in "9" or god forbid an "8") is 50% off!!!!

*Due to the limited nature of the Black Friday Releases and some of their very high costs to us, they are not included in this sale. Sorry. The limited releases are first come, first served and many things we got much less than we ordered, and some stuff isn't here yet so I'm still crossing my fingers.

Oh yeah, I guess this is technically our 6th Anniversary too since we opened on the day after Thanksgiving in 2005. So this is our present to you. We enjoy the present of your presence. And vegan treats too if you have them!

Black Friday Record Store Day

The same people that brought you Record Store Day the last four Aprils are back this November with a little holiday shopping treat. Record Store Day is gathering up some more super-limited, extra-choice collectible records for release on Black Friday.

The list below includes just some of the titles being released. Like the regular Record Store Day, there are some stipulations. Because of the insanely limited nature of these releases, we cannot guarantee that we will have stock of every title. We may only get a fraction of what we order or we may not get any copies of some titles at all. Therefore, there will be no pre-orders taken, no holds, and in the sake of fairness, we will limit each customer to one copy of any title and reserve the right to set a limit of the total number of pieces. We want everybody to have a shot at getting some of this good stuff. We ordered a little of everything to try to make everyone happy, but there are some things we surely won't have enough of...

Almost every day people come into the store and I hear them talking about how they'll just go home and get some record on Amazon because they think it's cheaper. Believe it or not, everything IS NOT cheaper on Amazon. They are the Wal-Mart of the internet that has done a good job branding themselves as the cheapest though. If a record in Lunchbox is priced high, it is because of the record label, not us. King Krule - S/T 12"/CDEP (True Panther)
King Krule's (formerly Zoo Kid) second release brings with it, an expansion of vision, both musically and thematically. The connective tissue between these five tracks is still Marshall’s stark, direct lyrics, but over the span of the self-titled EP, there is an arresting sonic progression, as his songs open up to become a loose knit meditation and renewal of hope in the face of desperation. Shades of The Streets’ plainspoken and observant ramble dance with the heart on sleeve confessions of Billy Bragg. Alasdair Roberts & Karine Polwart/Drew Wright - Scottish Split 7” (Twos & Fews)
7” released in tandem with the comp Whaur The Pig Gaed On The Spree. The A-side of the single is Alasdair Roberts' own arrangement and performance (with renowned Scottish singer Karine Polwart) of "Captain Wedderburn's Courtship," a traditional ballad, while the flipside features another young and talented traditionally-minded Scots singer, Drew Wright, who turns in an interpretation of the classic Scots border ballad, "The Dowie Dens O Yarrow."

Royal Trux - Singles Live Unreleased [Reissue/1997] 2xCD3xLP (Drag City)
Royal Trux was a band to which the word "definition" had no meaning. This 32-song bomb was dropped on a highly suspect America back in the early winter of 1997. Collected from 1988 to around the time they were signed to Virgin in 1994, this collection represents a living, breathing entity built of contradictions, rhythm, gleeful exploitation of limitations and clichés, the short con (and when you finally notice, they'd slip into the long one) and above all, total commitment.

Rush - Rush: Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland DVD (Zoe)
The 26-song two-disc set includes the band's performance of the classic Moving Pictures in its entirety. Also available on stand-alone DVD.

Sandwitches - Pearl b/w Benny's Memory Palace 7” (Hardly Art)
Gothic Americana and tender misfit pop. Expect tempered echo chamber delay on one side and then bask in an incredible falsetto lift and drop on the flip.

B-side is a cover of the Groundhogs almighty "Cherry Red."

Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler/The Dream CD/LP (In The Red)
New album captures the riot-sparking energy of their live show. While Castlemania was more of a vocal tirade, Carrion Crawler/The Dream is meant to pummel and throb.

Trash Talk - Awake - 7" (True Panther)
On, Awake, the brand new 7-inch EP for True Panther Sounds, Trash Talk continue to bodily propel their sound down the gnarled, grime-swathed path they’ve hewn for themselves. The aptly named opener “Awake” careens through the gate in a hail of shred. “Slander” squeals, stacks, smashes and releases in one minute flat, while “Blind Evolution” seems epic at over two, progressing from rapid thrash to a grungy, halftime sludge. Then, in comes “Burn Alive,” tailor-made to elicit air punches (be aware of your surroundings when you drop the needle), with its screeched out anti-wisdom: “The good die young, but the great survive.” Finally, “Gimme Shelter” brings things to a punishing, pummeling close and it all happens so quickly, so feverishly that the listener’s left beaten, bruised and ears bleeding with no real sense of what just happened. Which is, of course, how Trash Talk likes it. Forwards ever, backwards never.

TV Casualty - S/T - 7" (Matador)
This is the first recorded document to be released by a collective made up of Brian Sokel (Franklin, AM/FM), Andy Nelson (Ceremony, Paint It Black), Atom Goren (Atom and His Package) & Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists). Over the past few years the group has played out in and around Philly for different charitable events, assembling as The Ramones (with Rodney Anonymous), Black Flag (with Dan Yemin) and Minor Threat (with Mike McKee). Here, Ted Leo joins the band as Glen Danzig, in what else but their take on The Misfits.

Originally started on my 33 1/3 birthday (4 months after my real birthday), but no one really seemed to understand the relation and kept wishing me happy birthday all day. So now it has become more than that and an annual sale to show you my love. We need to clear things out and you need cheap records, what a great trade! The Story:

Fucked Up have the most perfect name for any band in rock history. In two words it bluntly states the truth that lies at the heart of the white noise maelstrom - things are different from what you expect.

Right from the start this Toronto band has been pushing musical and conceptual boundaries. Forming ostensibly as a punk band, they swiftly took on hardcore and twisted it into their own version, with a psychedelic edge, unexpected instrumentation like flute and keyboards, and songs stretched to perverse lengths.
They initially released a series of impossible to find 7” singles, all with related artwork that sometimes landed them in trouble, and sometimes looked like they came from the late 60s, when minds were melting with possibilities. There were also albums that continued this theme, each one more bold and adventurous.

Meanwhile, the band’s gigs took on legendary status. Frontman Damian Abraham's nude stage dives and blood-strewn face were becoming a lunatic motif for a take on the hardcore genre that constantly upended assumptions: lyrics about plants and rebirth, moneys to charities for battered women. All the time, there was a sense of a narrative, and even in their loudest moments there was a deep intelligence to their music.

The narrative itself has come to full fruition on their new album, the 78-minute David Comes To Life rock opera, an album set to a play.

In the punk wars the rock opera was held up as the ultimate example of decadent capitalist-pig rock, the kind of opulent, navel-gazing fodder of faded rock dictators clinging onto power by their filthy fingernails and their tediously long records. It breaks the strict rules of punk and is precisely the reason why Fucked Up have presented this mammoth work.

Their whole history has been mashing ferocious but highly thought-out music with brilliant concepts and Situationist philosophy. They have now made their ultimate statement, tying up all the loose ends and question marks in this sprawling, yet consistently brilliant album.

In anyone else’s hands, David Comes To Life might be a disaster, but Fucked Up are in a different lineage – the concept album, after all, was invented by the Kinks or the Pretty Things and even the Who’s huffing-and-puffing Tommy and Hawkwind’s Space Ritual. You could even include some of the Crass albums as concept albums if you really thought about it – darkly powerful works that let you enter a parallel universe.

Though no less monumental, it is far more melodic than their breakthrough The Chemistry of Common Life. There are more female vocals, which work in perfect contrast to Abraham's highly effective wounded bull growl. The band sound tighter and with more space for the flourishes and imaginative songwriting that entwine their love of fey British indie pop with heavy riffing, and some genuinely twisted turns. Perhaps most grippingly, the triple-guitar interplay between Mike Haliechuk, Josh Zucker and Ben Cook has risen to symphonic levels. They channel musicians from Angus Young, Pete Townshend and Liam Gallagher to Bob Stinson and Lyle Preslar with ease and grace.

The result is better than Sham's That's Life, less desperate than SF Sorrow, a finer cultural self reference than Arthur and Village Green, a better tribute to plants than Dopesmoker, and more a unmixable album than Loveless. But you can hear all these musical touchstones in David's multi-layered melodic filigree.

A Few More RSD Notes

Just a few short things that I forgot in the last post:

THE SALE IS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, but if you want Record Store Day titles it's best to show up Saturday since many things will sell out then. I'll try to post a list of what's left on our Facebook page Sunday.

Also, we will stay open a little later Saturday and Sunday we will be open 12pm-7pm and perhaps a little later if it stays busy.

Lastly, here is a list of RSD items and what we have received. Everything we have copies of is marked with an X. We have copies of most everything you could want except I guess we need to kiss up to Jack White some more since we got dissed :P

Record Store Day Is This Saturday, April 16th!

In case you haven't heard or read about this, this Saturday we'll be taking part in the fourth annual Record Store Day, which is actually being held across the globe. For some info on what it's all about -- although you can pretty much assume what its motivations are -- check out www.recordstoreday.com

WE WILL BE OPENING AT 10 A.M. SATURDAY

Last year was awesome and the enthusiasm for RSD seems to grow every year with even more tons of releases coming out that day that are limited this year. From the measly 10-20 releases the first year it has now ballooned into over 200 releases. We've participated every year and have tried to grow with it as well, although this is the first year that we've been the only shop in Charlotte taking part. This means we had to consider some things that before we wouldn't have even thought about, and it gives us a new opportunity to make new friends and customers with folks that normally would have gone to some other store across town before they got bought out by a corporation.

Now, what does this mean for you? Well, over the past week we've been receiving tons of freebie goodies to give away in honor of Record Store Day. If you stop by on Saturday, we'll have a bag full of free stuff for you. It's first-come, first-serve, so if we're out of them by the time you get here, we're sorry. So try to make it earlier rather than later. These includes free 7"s, CDs, posters, buttons, stickers, shirts, etc.

ALSO there are Record Store Day EXCLUSIVES for sale only at participating indie stores. These are almost all very limited in nature, and in many case we did NOT get that many or as many as we ordered, so be ready. There were way more labels participating this year so there are bound to be some things I didn't even know about as well. We're trying our best to get everything though, but sometimes things slip through the cracks and with this many releases we had to budget ourselves a bit as well. There are also a bunch of UK ONLY releases, such as the Radiohead 12". We WILL NOT have the UK releases and cannot get them. A lot of people keeping asking since there are some nice ones, but those are for UK stores only.

Here’s a list of them, one you can print out, check off and take to your local record store. We’re doing things a little differently this year, so you’ll see a few different categories here:

RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES These are titles that are only being released for this day. These are true Record Store Day Exclusives.

“WINDOWED” RELEASES These are titles that will only be available in record stores on Record Store Day, but will someday be available to other retailers down the line.

To try to keep things more civil and manageable this year, we're going to have someone at the door so that 100 people don't try to cram in the store all at once. We are trying to make things run as smooth as possible and hopefully keep waiting to a minimum.

-Record Store Day items are limited to ONE PER CUSTOMER PER TITLE. I'm sorry if your cousin in Tuscaloosa doesn't have a record store nearby. We're looking out for locals first, and more importantly trying to discourage Ebay flippers.

-Please do not get mad at me if something is sold out or didn't come in. Several items have already been delayed or cancelled and several others I was never able to find. It's up to each store owner/buyer to order these things which means we have to hunt them down and also means we have to pay for them up front. Records are non-returnable which means this day is a stressful risk for us that usually works out. Also please realize that Lunchbox Records is run by one person 95% of the time. I try my hardest to order what regular customers buy and ask about first, then other items after that, but it's all a guessing game and I'm bound to guess wrong sometimes.

We will be having some bands play too, but a few things fell apart or were miscommunicated so it's just these two unless someone else offers in the next couple of days...

Now for my rant...(reprinted from year one of RSD for your convenience)

You're probably wondering what RECORD STORE DAY is anyway? I was at first too. But it's basically a revamped customer appreciation day where hopefully you the customer appreciates us as well and the fact that you live in or near a town that still has independent record stores. I personally don't like to buy things online, but lots of people do. But it's great to know that you can go to a store and browse and stumble on things you never would have thought of or heard of otherwise. You don't get too much of that online. We also do everything in our capabilities to sell you records as cheap as we can. This means buying direct whenever possible and searching for deals and unfortunately not bringing some stuff in because big labels like to give chain stores better deals than the little guy. Our prices for most things we stock are typically $2-$5 cheaper than the big store across town. We don't do sales often because we prefer to make it cheap all of the time. We stock tons of LPs and 7"s because we love the format and when I opened this store the other stores we're still busy trying to kill the format. I believe in independent music and labels and try to stock as much as I can which means a lot of lesser known indie, punk and metal titles.

I've been going to record stores since as long as I can remember, buying my first 7" in 1984 and getting into punk a couple years later. It wasn't until I moved to Atlanta that I had good stores that stocked underground releases and I've been addicted ever since. If I didn't love record stores I wouldn't own one. I'd go get a job that made a lot more money. People come in here a lot and tell me they love the store and it's great, and lots of out of town folks and bands do too. I really have no reference point on that anymore since I'm here seven days a week. There's only 2 other stores that sell vinyl in town, one is oldies oriented and the other banned me for life when I stopped working there and opened my own store. So I never get to go to any other stores and just try to make mine the one I would want to go to. I'm nowhere near that point yet and am working to improve it all of the time. I value people's suggestions and take them seriously, probably a little too seriously. But if you don't tell me what you want I can't read minds. The point of this being that I think the store is pretty good, and there are tons of folks that don't have a decent record store anywhere near them. So hopefully you'll support us. I realize the store isn't for everybody though.

We will continue to sell you lots of records we and you think are cool, and we will continue to have shows in the store as long as I can and bring awesome out of town bands to Charlotte. We are very thankful of those of you that have supported us for the last 5.5 years. And if you've never been here before, please come visit us.

Record Store Day is April 16th

Record Store Day is coming and here is a list of most items that we are aware of that are coming out that day. We are trying to get as many of these as we can and as we think our customers would want, but due to the limited quantities we cannot guarantee anything. All items that day are limited to one person customer so that fans can get the records instead of Ebay flipper jerks. There are over 500 stores participating this year, and many releases have less than that quantity available so you do the math. But mostly we just want to sell you cool music and have fun!!!

These are almost all very limited in nature, and in many case we did NOT get that many or as many as we ordered, so be ready. There were way more labels participating this year so there are bound to be some things I didn't even know about as well. We're trying our best to get everything though, but sometimes things slip through the cracks and with this many releases we had to budget ourselves a bit as well.

The same people that brought you Record Store Day the last three Aprils are back this November with a little holiday shopping treat. Record Store Day is gathering up some more super-limited, extra-choice collectible records for release on Black Friday.

The list below includes just some of the titles being released. Like the regular Record Store Day, there are some stipulations. Because of the insanely limited nature of these releases, we cannot guarantee that we will have stock of every title. We may only get a fraction of what we order or we may not get any copies of some titles at all. Therefore, there will be no pre-orders taken, no holds, and in the sake of fairness, we will limit each customer to one copy of any title and reserve the right to set a limit of the total number of pieces. Originally started on my 33 1/3 birthday (4 months after my real birthday), but no one really seemed to understand the relation and kept wishing me happy birthday all day. So now it has become more than that and an annual sale to show you my love. We need to clear things out and you need cheap records, what a great trade! Magic Kids In-store Tour!

The Magic Kids from Memphis are doing a tour of stores in the south for their new album "Memphis" which comes out August 24th. They will be playing at Lunchbox on Friday, August 27th at 6 PM. This is a little earlier than our normal in-stores and they will be they only band but it will tons of fun. This is their only North Carolina date!

In case you haven't heard or read about this, this Saturday we'll be taking part in the third annual Record Store Day, which is actually being held across the globe. WE WILL BE OPENING AT 10 A.M. SATURDAY

Last year was awesome and I guess people felt left out because there are tons of releases coming out that day that are limited. Now, what does this mean for you? Well, over the past week we've been receiving tons of freebie goodies to give away in honor of Record Store Day. If you stop by on Saturday, we'll have a bag full of free stuff for you. It's first-come, first-serve, so if we're out of them by the time you get here, we're sorry. So try to make it earlier rather than later. These includes free LPs, 7"s, CDs, posters, a couple Devo hats, stickers, etc.

ALSO there are Record Store Day EXCLUSIVES for sale only at participating indie stores. These are almost all very limited in nature, and in many case we did NOT get that many or as many as we ordered, so be ready. Now for my rant...(reprinted from last year for your convenience)

You're probably wondering what RECORD STORE DAY is anyway? I was at first too. But it's basically a revamped customer appreciation day where hopefully you the customer appreciates us as well and the fact that you live in or near a town that still has independent record stores. I personally don't like buy things online, but lots of people do. But it's great to know that you can go to a store and browse and stumble on things you never would have thought of or heard of otherwise. You don't get too much of that online. We also do everything in our capabilities to sell you records as cheap as we can. This means buying direct whenever possible and searching for deals and unfortunately not bringing some stuff in because big labels like to give chain stores better deals than the little guy. Our prices for most things we stock are typically $2-$5 cheaper than the big store across town. We don't do sales often because we prefer to make it cheap all of the time. We stock tons of LPs and 7"s because we love the format and when I opened this store the other stores we're still busy trying to kill the format. I believe in independent music and labels and try to stock as much as I can which means a lot of lesser known indie, punk and metal titles. I'm not against major labels, but 99% of what they release is manufactured garbage, although they were all once viable indie labels.

I've been going to record stores since as long as I can remember, buying my first 7" in 1984 and getting into punk a couple years later. It wasn't until I moved to Atlanta that I had good stores that stocked underground releases and I've been addicted ever since. If I didn't love record stores I wouldn't own one. I'd go get a job that made a lot more money. People come in here a lot and tell me they love the store and it's great, and lots of out of town folks and bands do too. I really have no reference point on that anymore since I'm here seven days a week. There's only 2 other stores that sell vinyl in town, one is oldies oriented and the other banned me for life when I stopped working there and opened my own store. So I never get to go to any other stores and just try to make mine the one I would want to go to. I'm nowhere near that point yet and am working to improve it all of the time. I value people's suggestions and take them seriously, probably a little too seriously. But if you don't tell me what you want I can't read minds. The point of this being that I think the store is pretty good, and there are tons of folks that don't have a decent record store anywhere near them. So hopefully you'll support us. I realize the store isn't for everybody though.

We will continue to sell you lots of records we and you think are cool, and we will continue to have shows in the store as long as I can and bring awesome out of town bands to Charlotte. We are very thankful of those of you that have supported us for the last 4.5 years. And if you've never been here before, please come visit us.

As usual, this is a frustrating mess for me to figure out what is actually coming out, how and where to get it, but I think we've got the bulk of it out of the way. Built from the remnants of South Carolina hardcore legends Assfactor 4, whose name still inspires hushed tones of reverence from those who saw them at their peak, along with Unherd & Tonka, SLED is the punk-metal monster caged over a decade of musical inactivity, fueled by beer and conviction to make itself known once more.

Guitarist Evil Dean and drummer Cuz – both ex-Assfactor 4 – enlisted bassist Curly from local death metal band Necrocide and the beast was born.

And like a thinking man might conclude, the beast on rampage for these nine cuts is a snarling, ravenous and frantic one. Reminding of their old band’s sprinting urgency, Evil Dean howls his words like they’re being torn from his gums; Cuz lunges into his beats, tightening time like a thumbscrew. Curly, the death metaller, pulls back on Cuz’s redline acceleration, dropping skull-stomping basslines and stretching the songs’ tension to the point of destruction.

The passion and energy and ferocity that drives SLED was never meant to be caged. A psychopath can only suppress his urges for so long.

You have two options. You either greet your evisceration with open arms, or you cower away, biting your fingernails to the quick and vainly hoping your fate doesn’t’ find you.

Too many bands get worn out in their age and start to play sad bastard woe-is-me music when they should be getting more pissed off. The folks in SLED are still pissed and still better than most bands half their age.

Records are all on various colored vinyl like Kudzu Green, Bacon Blue, Cakalak Gray, etc. Comes with MP3 download card. Plays at 45 rpm for maximum rockage.

Parking Pt. 2

Thanks to Bob at Cafe Central and the owners of the property at 1401 Central Ave. (Rudolph Moore Properties) they have agreed to stop booting cars on their property for now.

I also want to let everyone know that it was not the Cafe or StorySlam doing the booting, but an outside company employed by the property owners. I have no ill will towards the businesses there and in fact I have even played at StorySlam a few weeks ago with Jacob Wick at a jazz show there and the owners were extremely nice. And I really do want to support anyone that helps support avant music and art, so I'm glad this issue is resolved.

I still want to encourage you NOT to park there though since it is their property. Again, you can park at the areas marked below and never have to worry about things:

I am going to try to get some signs made that more clearly mark the spaces that are actually ours (the ones behind our building). I guess some people do not like to park back there but I can assure you that it is safe and we even had the city install an outside spotlight about a year ago to make it more visible.

Hey, we just released a new 7" by Meth Mountain. METH MOUNTAIN is a ragin' punk band from the Queen City of Charlotte, NC. New 7" release that is a split being Lunchbox, Made In Kansas, and Self Aware. Most of these tracks are influenced by FUCKED UP, late era BLACK FLAG, and even a hint of surf influence a la MASSHYSTERI. Hey - maybe you noticed but maybe you didn't. Anyway, I changed the news page to a blog site because it's easier for me to update and gives you all more info on one page. So if you don't want to click on the show list you can just glance at it, but there are links on the show page so you should go there anyhow. This way is easier to search and keep up to date with too, and if you want you can even use that fancy RSS feed stuff. This has been set up for a while but I don't think anyone knew about it and I've finally decided to give it a full-on try. So let me know what you think. I've added all of the updates from the old pages and from before we even had a real website from the Myspace page because no one seems to check Myspace anymore. So all the way from the beginning in 2005.

Notice that new button up there that says "ORDER"? Well, we have unleashed the small yet nimble Lunchbox webstore. This has been in the works for some time as well, but it kept getting put on the back burner for various reasons. It's mostly local releases for now along with Lunchbox releases and a few other things. Hopefully this will help spread the word on some local stuff and make them easier to find. It is by no means anywhere near what we have in the store for sale, so if you are looking to order something else just email or call. I'll try to add new stuff when I can, but it's never going to be our entire stock - you have to come in to browse that.

Well it has been quite a while but somehow we managed a new stock update for you. I don't mean to let these things slide, but typing all of this stinks and there's always a pile of used records calling my name asking to be priced. This is most of what's come in the last couple weeks from mid-August up until the first week of September.

We recently were picked as the BEST PLACE TO BUY CDS by Creative Loafing's critics. It should also be noted that we were mentioned as also the BEST PLACE TO BUY VINYL since for some reason they don't have a separate category for that one. Thanks to everyone who voted.

We received the test presses for our next release a week or so ago and it sounds great. It will be our first LP in a long time, this one by Columbia, SC band SLED. SLED is a hardcore band with ex-members of Assfactor 4, Unherd, and Tonka. If you know any of those bands, you should be stoked. If not, just trust us and check out their myspace page.

Be sure to check out our show list too. We don't have a ton coming up, but some really good ones including the LP release show by Great Architect, a Charlotte jazz/noise rock band.

We can now order needles and cartridges for you. You need a replacement stylus for your new turntable that came with a crappy plastic needle? You need a new stylus for the turntable your grandpa gave you? We can order them for you, just bring us as much info as you can (turntable model, cartridge model, and preferably the actual needle) and we'll find the right one for you. We will have some pre-amps next week too.

We also already sell slipmats, inner and outer sleeves for LPs and 7"s, storage boxes, record mailers, belts, record cleaners, 45 adapters and inserts, and new and used turntables.

Lunchbox Records has a handful of shows coming up in the next month. This past week we were lucky enough to have Make Do and Mend, , The Stereo State, Panzram, and Relics, as well as locals Coma League, Trapper, and Junior Astronomers. Thanks to everyone that came to the shows, it's always been a blast being able to have all-ages shows in Charlotte.

We still have a bunch of shows this summer, including a special matinee on Friday, August 14th, featuring North Carolina's own Logic Problem, and The Shitty Limits, from the UK. We just got copies of the new Logic Problem 7" as well, so make sure to pick that up and learn all the words before the show.

We're also pretty excited to announce that Lion of Judah will be playing at Lunchbox on August 5th with Give, and Meth Mountain.

Grids 7"s Are Finally Here!

Long time no update. Busy trying to actually have a life outside of working 7 days a week I guess. Anyhow of course the big news is that the new Grids 7" is finally out. We are having a record release show on June 12th at the Milestone with Yardwork and Tenspeed Trio. We are pleased to be putting out another record by another great local band. The records will be $4.00 at the show or in the store, but at the show you can get a special limited release cover. More info here.

Also a few other local bands are planning some vinyl release, so be on the lookout for stuff from Lowbrow, Great Architect, and I think a Black Congo LP in the next few months.

We have an in-store performance Saturday, June 13 with Richard Swift who is playing with the Fray at the Charlotte Boutique Amphitheater that night. Here is what Creative Loafing has to say about him:

The Fray blah-blah-blah, hit song on Lost blah-blah-blah, blah-blah-the American Coldplay-blah, etc. The only possible reasons for attending this show if you're not a weepy 16-year-old are to hear what the acoustics sound like at the new Uptown venue, or opener Richard Swift, who's been described as "Prince sitting in on the Plastic Ono Band sessions."

We are still trudging on here at the store. Tons of new release and great used stuff, but with me trying to keep up with everything I haven't typed up a new release list in quite a while. If you are ever wondering if we have something or will be getting it, just call or email us and will be glad to tell you if we have it or order it for you if we don't. We get lots of stuff each week and our prices are usually cheaper than other stores in town. And before you order stuff online check with us because we'll be more than glad to ship to you as well. And we'll ship your records in boxes meant for records, not some giant box like those idiots at Amazon. We actually care about vinyl here, which is also why we put sleeves on our used records and don't stick annoying price tags directly on the cover like other stores.

We don't have any bands playing during the day because if you've been in here during one of our shows you know we have to move a lot of stuff around which kind of messes up the sale aspect of the day. We've managed to have about 300 bands play here in 3 years though, so we're definitely trying to do our part. Anyway, we are having a DJ that day to spin cool records of his collection, some of mine, some of Rob's and if you want to bring some of yours let us know and maybe we can do that too. Later that night MOENDA will be playing. This is the new band with 2/3 of Calabi Yau, whom we obviously loved enough to put out a 7" by. Rogue Nations was supposed to play their LP/CD release too, but some last minute events have made them have to postpone that. The Have & The Have Nots will be playing also.

Now for my rant...(reprinted from last year for your convenience)

You're probably wondering what RECORD STORE DAY is anyway? I was at first too. But it's basically a revamped customer appreciation day where hopefully you the customer appreciates us as well and the fact that you live in or near a town that still has independent record stores. I personally don't like buy things online, but lots of people do. But it's great to know that you can go to a store and browse and stumble on things you never would have thought of or heard of otherwise. You don't get too much of that online. We also do everything in our capabilities to sell you records as cheap as we can. This means buying direct whenever possible and searching for deals and unfortunately not bringing some stuff in because big labels like to give chain stores better deals than the little guy. Our prices for most things we stock are typically $2-$5 cheaper than the big store across town. We don't do sales often because we prefer to make it cheap all of the time. We stock tons of LPs and 7"s because we love the format and when I opened this store the other stores we're still busy trying to kill the format. I believe in independent music and labels and try to stock as much as I can which means a lot of lesser known indie, punk and metal titles. I'm not against major labels, but 99% of what they release is manufactured garbage, although they were all once viable indie labels.

I've been going to record stores since as long as I can remember, buying my first 7" in 1984 and getting into punk a couple years later. It wasn't until I moved to Atlanta that I had good stores that stocked underground releases and I've been addicted ever since. If I didn't love record stores I wouldn't own one. I'd go get a job that made a lot more money. People come in here a lot and tell me they love the store and it's great, and lots of out of town folks and bands do too. I really have no reference point on that anymore since I'm here seven days a week. There's only 2 other stores that sell vinyl in town, one is oldies oriented and the other banned me for life when I stopped working there and opened my own store. So I never get to go to any other stores and just try to make mine the one I would want to go to. I'm nowhere near that point yet and am working to improve it all of the time. I value people's suggestions and take them seriously, probably a little too seriously. But if you don't tell me what you want I can't read minds. The point of this being that I think the store is pretty good, and there are tons of folks that don't have a decent record store anywhere near them. So hopefully you'll support us. I realize the store isn't for everybody though.

We will continue to sell you lots of records we and you think are cool, and we will continue to have shows in the store as long as I can and bring awesome out of town bands to Charlotte. We are very thankful of those of you that have supported us for the last 3.5 years. And if you've never been here before, please come visit us.

The GRIDS 7"s are almost here. We have the covers ready to go, and we got our first test press last week which had a little issue that will hopefully get fixed next week. But anyway we are planning an awesome release show at The Milestone on June 12th with Grids, Yardwork, Moenda, and Tenspeed. Oh yeah, the first 30 copies will come with special screened covers, and all copies will come with download coupons.

After that we should have the SLED LPs out pretty soon as well. Everything has been mastered and is ready. I just have to recoup all the money I spent on RSD first. If you don't know, SLED is from Columbia, SC and is 2 of the folks from Assfactor 4 and rocks accordingly.

One more special surprise after that - another LP! This will prove to be our busiest year as a label since 1995. Ha ha.
